The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a revolutionary plane with many new design features.  They included the tricycle landing gear, twin-booms, butt-joined and flush riveted all-metal skin and large centrally mount weapons package.

This plane served not only as a fighter, but also as a reconnaissance aircraft and a bomber as well.
